Bayh Accepts Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame Merit Award

The Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame proudly presented the first Merit Award to former US Senator Birch Bayh at the Conrad Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana on Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Bayh was recognized for his significant contributions to soccer through authorship of the Title IX legislation.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was enacted on June 23, 1972. The legislation expanded educational and athletic opportunities for girls and women. Bayh is often considered the father of Title IX legislation, served in the Indiana House of Representatives and represented Indiana in the U.S. Senate from 1963 to 1981.

The Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame was started in 1992. This organization belongs to the Indiana soccer community and not to any one organization or group of individuals. The Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame works to honor the outstanding achievements and contributions of individuals whose significant accomplishments and effect upon the sport of soccer in Indiana merit the highest recognition; to promote the sport of soccer to both the soccer community and to the general public; to honor those who contributed to the growth of soccer in Indiana; to provide future generations with exemplary citizenship role models and to build and bring public attention to the sport of soccer in our state.
