2006 Kohl's US Youth Soccer American Cup - Fort Wayne

(Fort Wayne, Indiana) – Smiling faces and encouraging words were in high supply this weekend as the Fort Wayne area welcomed the Kohl’s American Cup to Indiana on the weekend of September 30th-October 1st, 2006. This year’s event included approximately 163 recreational teams ages U6 through U14.

In its seventh annual return to the Fort Wayne area, the Kohl’s Cup was hosted by Soccer Northeast at Hefner Fields at The Plex. Soccer Northeast is an organization of Club Presidents from the Northeast part of Indiana who team together to host the Kohl's Cup. Area clubs involved include: TRYSA, Huntertown, St Joe, Fort Wayne Fever Elites and NASA.

The Kohl's US Youth Soccer American Cup provides recreational youth soccer players an opportunity to experience a consistent and high quality statewide tournament in a fun, festival-like atmosphere. It fosters stimulation and excitement about soccer in an effort to increase the recreational players’ interest in and love for the game.

"It was a weekend of smiles and fun," commented Indiana Youth Soccer Director of Communication Shannon Stuart. "Positive parents, encouraging coaches, and an impressive cooperative effort by the Kohl's American Cup Interactive Village staff, The Plex and Soccer Northeast volunteers made this a memorable experience for recreational players."

It is the Kohl's American Cup philosophy that all players should receive equal opportunities and benefits within their level of play. All players have the right to participate in competitions where they can develop and exhibit their skills while enjoying themselves. The Kohl's American Cup provides recreational players this opportunity and places emphasis on participation, as opposed to competition.

Nationwide, more than 55 Kohl’s American Cup events are scheduled for 2006, and one thing each of them have in common is the goal of providing all participants with the opportunity to experience a consistent and high-quality tournament in a fun, festival-like atmosphere.

The Fort Wayne event included a visit from the Kohl's American Cup Soccer Experience Vehicle and the Interactive Village with three inflatable soccer shoot/pass/score opportunities. Volunteers from the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Men's and Women's Soccer Teams helped man the Interactive Village. The tournament also featured a sports equipment vendor and concessions. Each child received a Kohl's American Cup soccer pin, wristband and a medallion at the close of their two game schedule.
